Freelance Part-Time BookkeeperLocation: Hybrid remote in Brooklyn, NY
The RETI Center is a nonprofit organization based in South Brooklyn, committed to equity, ecology, and economy. Our programs focus on fostering a sustainable future by addressing climate resilience, clean energy workforce development, and community empowerment. We operate out of a unique, community-focused space on the Red Hook waterfront and are dedicated to creating a supportive, collaborative work environment that reflects our values of innovation and sustainability.
We are seeking a meticulous and skilled Bookkeeper to support our growing organization. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in nonprofit accounting principles, exceptional attention to detail, and a commitment to our mission of fostering equity and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Director of Operations the Bookkeeper will:
- Maintain accurate financial records, including accounts payable (AP), payroll journal entries, and banking transactions.
- Reconcile bank and credit card statements to ensure accounts are balanced, and resolve discrepancies promptly.
- Prepare tax documents, staying updated on nonprofit-specific regulations and tax codes.
- Ensure proper allocation and tracking of restricted and unrestricted funds, in compliance with grant requirements.
- Collaborate with management to prepare financial reports, forecasts, and budget projections.
- Assist in preparing for financial audits by ensuring accurate and complete documentation of all financial transactions, grant allocations, and restricted fund usage.
- Collaborate with auditors to provide required reports and reconciliations, addressing inquiries related to grant compliance and financial records.
- Assist in special projects, such as grant financial reporting, insurance tasks, and financial process improvements.
- Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and organizational policies.
- Utilize Quickbooks Online and advanced Excel functions for data entry, financial analysis, and process automation.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of bookkeeping experience, preferably with nonprofit organizations.
- Experience with grant management and nonprofit accounting practices.
- Proficiency in QuickBooks Online.
- Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Strong communication skills for working with vendors, staff, and community partners.
- Discretion and professionalism in handling sensitive financial information.

- Pay: $35.00 – $45.00 per hour, commensurate with experience
